Blurb:

In the bluegrass fields of Kentucky, Anne Wilson and her siblings, Jacob and Elizabeth, grew up in the security and love of their family--and Jesus. But when Jacob died in a car accident, Anne was thrust into a painful journey of grief and soul-wrestling that led to God calling her to create songs that glorified Him.

My Jesus weaves together Anne's personal story with an encouraging message to anyone longing for God to wipe away their tears.

No matter what season of life you're facing, My Jesus comes alongside you to:

Show how God can bring purpose out of loss
Offer hope in the midst of heartbreak
Remind you that God never abandons you
Discover the beauty that can emerge from suffering as you read Anne's story of growing closer to the God who always makes a way.

My Review

Going Into It:

Going into this book I was equally excited and nervous. Excited, because I had never read a Christian non-fiction memoir before, and nervous because it was supposedly a really sad book.

Main Characters:

  1. Anne Wilson- Anne is the main character of this book. She grew up with a strong Christian foundation. Her parents always encouraged her to follow her passions through God. Growing up, she always wanted to be an astronaut and explore God’s beautiful heavens. She is empathetic and loves kids.

  2. Jacob Wilson- Jacob is Anne’s older brother. He is eight years older than her. He is kind, caring, and also strong in his Christian faith. He loves hunting with his dog, Sallie.

  3. Elizabeth Wilson- Liz is Anne and Jacob’s sister. She is just older than Anne. She is a strong Christian, is loving, and is passionate about fashion.

  4. Lynn Wilson- Lynn is Jacob, Elizabeth, and Anne’s mom. She has always done her best to raise her children in Christian faith. She loves her kids with her whole heart and is caring. She also co-founded a school in Kentucky.

  5. Kent Wilson- Kent is Jacob, Elizabeth, and Anne’s dad. He is more reserved, but still passionate in his faith. He tries his best to be the strong, stable one in the family.

Wow!! These are real people with real personalities, and the book portrayed them AMAZINGLY!! They felt substantial and lively. Anne described everyone well, and made it clear that this book wasn’t about/for the characters, but God. They were always God’s messengers.

Character Rating: 10/10

Setting:

This book takes place (for the most part) in Lexington, Kentucky, the Wilson Family Farm, and Nashville, Tennessee

Anne infused this book with such a strong, faithful feeling. The physical setting itself wasn’t strongly focused on, but it didn’t hurt the book at all.

Setting Rating: 7.9/10

Plot:

Wow!! This plot was a complete, true story about Anne’s life. It clearly had it all: heartbreak, joy, and praise. I was worried the sadder parts of this book would make it less enjoyable and more depressing to read, but instead they SIGNIFICANTLY strengthened your emotions for Anne and her journey. During each sad part, there was always hope. Most importantly, this plot strengthened my awe for God and what he can do in someone’s life. ❤️✝️

Plot Rating: 10/10

Writing:

To be completely honest, the writing wasn’t perfect. It had AMAZING emotion and passion, but wasn’t quite as refined or practiced. It absolutely didn't get in my way of enjoying this book, but if you are a real critic, this might not quite be up to your standards.

Writing Rating: 5.8/10

Ending:

So sweet!! I loved going through Anne’s journey with her!! The ending tied up loose ends, and was satisfying. I could maybe see a sequel working one day…. but also LOVED this as a standalone book.

Ending Rating: 9.9/10

The Overall:

Overall, this was a moving, impactful book. To hear about Anne and her family’s struggles, and how they overcame them, was inspiring and grew my awe for God and all he can do in someone’s life. While it did have sad parts, it was also full of hope and love. Though, you can tell Anne isn’t a professional author (I DO NOT mean this in a bad way, more of a, don’t expect this to be some kind of piece of literature). This was an amazing book that I would recommend for anyone looking to learn about what God can do, strengthen a preexisting connection with him, or just become inspired learning about how he impacted someone else’s life.

Overall Book Rating: 8.7/10

I would obviously recommend this book
