Hook: Spensa has only ever known the caves of Detritus- the plant where the human race is now trapped on. The massive caverns are considered home for just about everyone, but not all the pilots. Not only do they often live on the dangerous surface of the planet, they board ships and fly towards space. Not for enjoyment, but to protect everyone hidden in caves from the alien spaceships that fly down from who-knows-where to attack everyone they can find. This is Spensa’s goal. She wants to become a pilot. Easier said than done, given her family history. Then, on one of her cave explorations, she finds a ship. It’s hidden away, and seems like no one has seen it in centuries. Maybe this can help get her through flight school? Maybe it can be her way out? Everything gets more complicated though, when she realizes her ship…. speaks…. thinks…. and might just have a soul.

Overall Book Rating: 10/10

I would strongly recommend this book

Review: This is one of the few books I listen to on Audible instead of owning and reading the physical book. But, the books I do listen to on Audible, I listen to over, and over, and over, again. So, clearly I LOVE this book!! I’ve probably listened to it………over 15 times?? That seems about right (Though it's not like I’ve been keeping track). Anyways…. I REALLY like this book. The writing is classic Brandon Sanderson (By which I mean, the writing is PERFECT and could not be BETTER). The plot is engaging and is full of little details that when I re-listen to it, I notice more. The characters are complex and detailed (but not in a confusing and frustrating way, more of in a realistic and engaging way). Overall, this book is AMAZING, and I COULD NOT recommend it enough!!!!!!

Main Characters:

  1. Spensa Nightshade- Spensa (call sign Spin), is the main character in this book. She is a 17 year old girl who is bold, brave, and agressive. She never backs down, sometimes to a fault, and refuses to follow orders or rules.

  2. Jorgen Weight- Jorgen (call sign Jerkface), is the leader of Spensa’s flight. He is an ULTIMATE rule follower and pretty much the opposite of Spensa.

  3. Rodge Mcaffery- Rodge (call sign Rig), is Spensa’s age and has been her friend since second grade. At the beginning of the book he is shy and insecure. He has bright red hair, and is brilliant.

Character Rating: 10/10

Setting:

This setting was described BEAUTIFULLY!! It was dry and barren, yet Brandon Sanderson made it sound lively and real.

Setting Rating: 10/10
